Why Nutrition Matters

Food is the foundation of every child's development

Nutrition is not just about what a child eats β€” it profoundly affects how a child grows, learns, behaves and responds to therapy. For children with developmental differences, sensory issues, autism or feeding difficulties, the right nutritional support can make a transformational difference.

At Prottasha, our nutrition programme is delivered by experienced specialists who understand the unique dietary needs of children with complex health profiles. We work alongside our SLT, OT and ABA teams to ensure that nutrition is integrated into every child's overall care plan.

We create practical, family-friendly and culturally appropriate meal plans that work in real Bangladeshi home and school settings β€” not just in theory.

Integrated Care

Why nutrition and therapy go hand in hand

πŸ”—
Nutrition + ABA & SLT

Children with autism often have severely restricted diets due to sensory sensitivities. Our nutrition specialist works alongside the ABA and SLT teams to gradually expand food acceptance using positive, structured approaches β€” increasing variety without trauma or force.

⚑
Nutrition + OT

Sensory processing difficulties can make mealtimes overwhelming. Our OT and nutrition teams collaborate on the physical and sensory aspects of feeding β€” addressing oral motor skills, utensil use, positioning and the sensory environment to make mealtimes calmer and more successful.

🧬
Nutrition + Brain Development

Research clearly links nutritional status to cognitive function, attention, mood and learning. Deficiencies in key nutrients β€” iron, iodine, vitamin D, omega-3, zinc β€” can directly impair a child's ability to benefit from therapy. Our nutrition plan targets these gaps specifically.

FAQ

Common questions about child nutrition

Yes β€” extremely selective eating (sometimes called "ARFID" or "problem feeding") can lead to significant nutritional deficiencies that affect growth, brain development and behaviour. However, with the right support it is very treatable. At Prottasha, we use gentle, evidence-based approaches to expand your child's food range without force or anxiety. The earlier you seek support, the easier the process.

Many children with autism have nutritional deficiencies due to restricted diets β€” particularly in vitamin D, omega-3, calcium, zinc and iron. Supplementation can be beneficial but must be guided by a specialist, as inappropriate doses can be harmful. Our nutritionist will assess your child's specific needs and recommend evidence-based supplementation where appropriate.

This is a very common question. The current scientific evidence does not conclusively support gluten-free/casein-free diets as a treatment for autism for all children. Some families report improvements; others do not see changes. Removing entire food groups can also increase nutritional risk. Our nutritionist will discuss this honestly with you and help you evaluate whether a trial elimination is appropriate for your child, with proper monitoring.

Absolutely. Our nutrition programme is open to all children β€” whether they have a diagnosis or simply have feeding challenges, growth concerns, allergies or parents who want to optimise their child's diet for health and brain development. You do not need a referral or diagnosis to book a nutrition consultation at Prottasha.

Yes β€” always. Our nutritionist is deeply familiar with Bangladeshi cuisine, ingredients and family food culture. All meal plans are designed around locally available, affordable and culturally appropriate foods. We do not prescribe foreign ingredients or impractical diets. The goal is nutrition that actually works in your home.
